Migrants as Brokers of South China's Extraversion

Heidi Østbø Haugen (University of Oslo)

Global connections have shaped the economy in South China since pre-modern times. The region has both been sending and receiving long-distance migrants for centuries. Ideas, money, and goods have travelled alongside with these flows of people. The lecture draws on ethnographic fieldwork in Guangzhou between 2009 and 2019 to discuss the city’s place in the global migration order and how shifting economic circumstances have influenced attitudes towards migrants.
